The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary School Education (MBSSE) of Sierra Leone has announced the results of the 2023 National Primary School Examination (NPSE), revealing a pass rate of 78.0%.

Minister Conrad Sackey confirmed that out of 164,971 candidates registered, 160,414 sat for the exams, with 125,092 pupils successfully passing.

“This year, we processed 164,971 candidates, with 160,414 sitting for the exams. A total of 125,092 pupils passed, achieving a 78.0% pass rate. Special congratulations to Haja Namassa Conteh for securing the highest score of 344,” he stated.

The top 2024 National Primary School Examination (NPSE) Primary School in Sierra Leone with more than one candidate is the International College of Makeni Primary School.

The School entered twenty four (24) candidates and they all passed with an average score of three hundred and twenty (320),” the Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), Conrad Sackey disclosed.

While the pass rate remains commendable, the ministry expressed concern over the slight drop in the performance of girls and has pledged to implement targeted interventions to address this issue.

The examination saw participation from 4,963 schools, an increase of 173 from the previous year. However, the ministry also noted a worrying trend of absenteeism, with 4,557 pupils missing all their exams. An investigation has been launched to understand the reasons behind this record-high absenteeism.

Minister Sackey emphasised the importance of continuing to prioritize education in the country.

He also mentioned that a detailed report, including guidelines for the 2024 Placement Process and a school price list for parents, will soon be available on the ministry’s website.
