APC Electoral Concerns
The All Peoples Congress (APC) has recently announced that its Presidential Candidate, Dr. Samura Matthew Wilson Kamara, will address the nation on Wednesday, June 14, 2023. The party has expressed serious concerns regarding electoral malpractices that could potentially undermine the forthcoming multi-tier elections scheduled for June 24, 2023. This article will delve into the key concerns raised by the APC and shed light on the issues affecting Sierra Leone’s electoral process.
Voter Registration Process
The APC has highlighted significant problems with the Voter Registration Process, which they claim has disenfranchised many eligible voters who are not aligned with the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP). This alleged bias has raised concerns about the fairness and impartiality of the electoral process.
Voter Identification Cards
Another issue raised by the APC is the poor quality of Voter Identification Cards. The party argues that these cards contain various deficiencies such as omissions, mismatches, missing photos and names, which render them unsuitable for their intended purpose. This raises doubts about the accuracy and reliability of the voter identification system.
Incomplete Final List of Voters
The APC alleges that the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) has released an incomplete Final List of Voters (FLV) or Voters Register, which they claim is a violation of the Public Elections Act of 2022. The party argues that the FLV fails to meet international best practices and points to a comparison with the FLV from the 2018 elections to support their claim.
Delay in Voter Registration Process
The APC further accuses the ECSL of failing to complete the Voter Registration process and related procedures within the stipulated time frame mandated by the Public Elections Act of 2022. This delay restricts the party’s ability to effectively plan and campaign for the upcoming elections
Bypassing District-Level Certification
The APC expresses concern over the alleged intention of the ECSL to bypass district-level certification of results, which is required by the Public Elections Act of 2022. This certification process, particularly important due to the application of the District Block System in these elections, has raised apprehension within the APC regarding the transparency and integrity of the electoral process.
Attacks on Supporters and Security Forces’ Response
The APC highlights nationwide attacks and brutalization of its supporters, even on scheduled campaign days. These actions not only endanger the well-being of party members but also undermine the overall electoral process. Furthermore, the party criticizes the deployment of security forces against defenseless civilians, arguing that it violates relevant provisions of the law.
Attacks on Supporters and Security Forces’ Response
The APC expresses disappointment with the judiciary and other state authorities for their alleged failure to ensure justice for their members across the country. The party believes that the lack of intervention and proper investigation into reported cases of violence and intimidation raises doubts about the commitment to a fair and just electoral process.
Dr. Samura Matthew Wilson Kamara’s Address
In response to these concerns, the APC’s leadership has resolved that their Presidential Candidate, Dr. Samura Matthew Wilson Kamara, will address the nation on June 14, 2023. During this address, Dr. Kamara will present the party’s position on the aforementioned issues and outline the way forward for the upcoming multi-tier Presidential, Parliamentary, and Local Council Elections on June 24, 2023
